Although active adult communities are designed to support active lifestyle, there are many deviations from one community to another. When looking for an active adult community, here are some steps to take along the way.

1. The first thing to do is to choose a retirement location. Consider the climate, nearness to family and friends, amenities and the area around the community. Some communities are set in suburbs, small towns, or near to urban centers. Others are located near mountains, deserts, beaches or northern towns.

2. Take into priority your wants and needs. Check out several active adult communities to determine the amenities they have to offer and make your own list of importance. Consider the desired features in the surrounding areas as well, like proximity to medical centers and airports.

3. There are many active adult communities to fit any budget. When you plan to move, consider not only the cost of the home but community fees as well. While most amenities are included in the basic homeowner fees, some may require additional membership fees for tennis or golf classes and other activities.

4. Make a list of your favorite communities by browsing through the internet. Make a note on what you like most about each of them and revise your list as you search, removing or adding until you have a few choices left.

5. Make it a point to visit your prospective communities. Ask questions while you are visiting, most especially regarding community rules and regulations.

6. Check out the surrounding areas as well. While you should take note of shopping, dining and recreational activities, you should also consider your daily needs. Look for the nearest banks, groceries and pharmacies and make sure to find the closest hospital and medical facilities. Driving through the neighborhood outside the area could also give you an idea about the place in general.

Buyers in an active adult community have to determine when a home will be ready for occupancy since some developments can take months or even a year to become ready. Furthermore, if planned amenities like fitness centers, clubhouses or golf course are necessary, it would be smart to make sure that these will be completed as soon as possible.

There are some communities that provide these amenities only after most homes are completed, which means a long wait for the first set of residents.
